Y-TOWN and thequietriot.com

Y-TOWN – the Shanghai based design agency – joins thequietriot.com network.

Over the last years China has emerged as the new economic power house and achieved tremendous growth rates. However, the environment, energy efficiency and sustainability have not been a top priority. Y-TOWN was set up in 2006 to make a difference.

Y-TOWN was founded in Shanghai by some of the top Chinese product designers with a German educational background. The team constantly investigates the boundaries between aesthetics (!) and human needs, as well as the interaction between design and everyday life. The resultant products, which tread the fine line between high functional and aesthetic value, are  unique, and characterised by  the recycling and adaptation of unexpected items which are put to use in a totally new way.

Y-TOWN are determined to take a strong stand against the traditional definition of design. Using  the team’s rethink, redesign and reuse philosophy, you are invited to explore new innovative design possibilities .

The re-interpretation of oriental culture to respond to modern life and the creative  re-use of everyday material are at the heart of Y-TOWNS philosophy.

The name derives from the English translation of the Bund, Shanghai’s oriental landmark between the East and the West, the new and the old,  tradition and innovation. Y-TOWN was founded  to explore these  areas recognising that they are  open to constant change and encouraging us all to question design and everyday life.

The first design Y-TOWN presents on thequietriot.com is an Office Furniture System for MABEG. The design is inspired by the Chinese stool of the Ming Dynasty. The office furniture system is modular, quick to manufacture and diversify. It is based on a system made from recycled aluminium. The system is highly flexible and it can be adjusted to accommodate individual needs and modes of use.
